    Summer Reading Challenge

Derwent Valley BRIDGE works in conjunction with local schools to encourage children to continue to read during the long summer holiday by participating in The Summer Reading Challenge, organised nationally by The Reading Agency. Three quarters of a million primary school children take part and visit their local library as a result.

  • There is a different theme each year and books must be borrowed from the library
  • Children read up to six books and receive a special reward every time they finish two books
  • A certificate is awarded to everyone who completes the challenge
  • It’s completely free and designed for all reading abilities

Holiday Activities, Competitions and Family Fun Days

We organise activity days in the school holidays and on other occasions during the year. Featuring stories, rhymes, songs, art and crafts, these events have had themes such as fairies, pirates and the seaside.

The Pat Almond Memorial Competitions

We organise competitions for three separate age groups of children in conjunction with the Pat Almond Memorial Lecture and the local schools. Prizes are awarded to the winners of each age group on the night of the lecture by the guest speaker.
